In Conversation: Convergint Japan’s Service Department Manager on Career Development and Team Growth

My background is IT, so I’ve been working in technology my whole career, largely in project management. I moved into the security industry over a decade ago and joined Convergint in 2021 as a Project Manager. In July 2023, I was given the opportunity to take on the role of Service Department Manager to oversee all project and service delivery across Japan.

In 2023, the Japan business was experiencing significant growth. Our delivery team was expanding rapidly, and I saw a need for strong leadership to navigate challenges and drive success. On a personal level, I found fulfillment in project management, but one the other hand, I felt that a leadership position would allow me to broaden my skill set, deepen my understanding of organisational dynamics, and enhance my ability to influence and inspire others. The role was also an opportunity to contribute to the company’s objectives, so I was motivated to step up and try to make an impact.

With a growing team and various key large-scale projects in progress at the time, the transition was challenging. But I soon realised that communication and goal setting were key to ensuring we delivered results. Regular 1-on-1 meetings with my team members helped to resolve their challenges and provided a clearer vision for their career path and goals. This also helped me to identify common challenges faced and how they could be addressed. I still carry out regular 1-on-1 meetings with my team—I find it really helps set and achieve our goals and objectives.

My ongoing goal is to develop a high performing, motivated, and engaged team—it’s fundamental to our success. That not only means hiring new talent, but also training and upskilling our current team, as well as fostering a strong Convergint culture. I firmly believe that with our growing business, there are many opportunities ahead.
