Convergint had the privilege of engaging in a conversation with Richie Sunderland, a dedicated Site Manager at Convergint, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of their role and the paramount importance of safety in diverse projects. Richie provided valuable insights into Convergint’s proactive approach to safety, emphasising the support mechanisms in place, and delving into the tangible benefits customers can expect due to the company’s steadfast commitment to safety.

What does your role at Convergint entail?

As a site manager, my role is very varied and dependent on the type of project I have been assigned to. I have been lucky enough to be assigned to some large projects, one being the largest building site in Europe at the time, and the other as the principal contractor on a large private estate. Being appointed as the principal contractor brought many challenges, including ensuring the health and safety of various trades, the client, client family members, resident staff, and the many animals roaming the site. My role includes producing programs for projects, assisting project managers, reporting on project progress, presenting toolbox talks, and carrying out site safety and quality inspections.

How does Convergint support its culture of safety?

Convergint supports its safety culture by keeping all colleagues updated with any new health and safety developments and requirements via meetings and site visits. The health and safety team is fully dedicated to ensuring safety is a culture and not just a tick box exercise. Past statistics highlight the positive effect of introducing a health and safety culture on the reduction of injuries/incidents during our daily working lives.

How is Convergint proactive about safety?

Convergint is proactive about safety with a dedicated health and safety team providing advice and regular training to ensure all colleagues work safely. Monthly meetings with the H&S team in the operations department focus on discussing safety matters and planning new, safer ways of working. The team continually works towards making our company and colleagues as safe as possible through ongoing training courses, site visits, and ensuring all colleagues have the correct and up-to-date safety certifications.

Convergint’s commitment to producing works to the highest standards and in the safest manner provides customers with peace of mind, making a significant difference when tendering for projects.

What advice do you have for someone looking to join the security integration industry?

My advice for those entering the security integration industry is to be proactive in exploring the diverse opportunities within the evolving landscape. As the industry undergoes rapid technological changes, individuals should develop skills beyond traditional roles, including programming and a solid understanding of the Internet. Embracing these changes will open doors to exciting possibilities.
